Active Degassing of Deeply Sourced Fluids in Central Europe: New Evidences From a Geochemical Study in Serbia

2021

We report on the results of an extensive geochemical survey of fluids released in the Vardar zone (central-western Serbia), a mega-suture zone at the boundary between Eurasia and Africa plates. Thirty-one bubbling gas samples are investigated for their chemical and isotopic compositions (He, C, Ar) and cluster into three distinct groups (CO2-dominated, N2-dominated, and CH4-dominated) based on the dominant gas species. The measured He isotope ratios range from 0.08 to 1.19 Ra (where Ra is the atmospheric ratio), and reveal for the first time the presence of a minor (<20%) but detectable regional mantle-derived component in Serbia. δ13C values range from −20.2‰ to −0.1‰ (versus PDB), with…

Fluvial activity of the late-glacial to Holocene “Bergstraßenneckar” in the Upper Rhine Graben near Heidelberg, Germany – first results

2022

Abstract. The term “Bergstraßenneckar” (BSN) refers to an abandoned course of the river Neckar. It flowed in a northern direction east of the river Rhine in the eastern part of the northern Upper Rhine Graben in southwestern Germany. The former meandering course merged with the Rhine ca. 50 km further north of the site of the present-day confluence near Mannheim. The palaeo-channels are still traceable by their depressional topography, in satellite images and by the curved boundaries of adjacent settlements and land parcels. In the plan view, satellite and aerial images reveal a succession of meander bends, with older bends being cut off from younger channels. Based on stratigraphic investi…

Wizerunek cudzoziemca w świetle Pamiętników z czasów Jana Sobieskiego, króla polskiego, Kazimierza Sarneckiego (1629–1696)

2013

Pamiętnik Kazimierza Sarneckiego należy do najczęściej wykorzystywanych źródeł do epoki Jana III Sobieskiego.

2019

The essay identifies key patterns in a group of music dictionaries printed in some Slavic Central-Eastern European lands from the time of national awakening to the 20th-century’s post war period. The common approach of first Polish, Bohemian, and Croatian lexica imply the difficulty in choosing between two different criteria. Given that the three lands were under the administration of Prussian, Russian and Austrian governments, the problem emerged either in creating an exclusive list of names based on the concept of nationality, or in writing an inclusive list of “stranger” and domestic musicians, who contributed together to the development of music culture. Except a rare case, the second o…

A View from the Inside: The Dawning Of De-Westernization of CEE Media and Communication Research?

2015

The Editorial outlines some characteristics of the development of the Central and Eastern European (CEE) media and communication scholarship during the past 25 years. In the majority of CEE countries, the media and communication research was re-established after the collapse of communism. Since then, a critical mass of active scholars has appeared who form an integral part of the larger European academia. A gradual integration of East and West perspectives in media and communication research is taking place along with moving away from the barely West-centred approach, and utilizing the research done by CEE scholars. Certain 'de-westernization' and internationalization of the research in ter…

Response to Comment on "Ancient DNA from the First European Farmers in 7500-Year-Old Neolithic Sites"

2006

The discovery of mitochondrial type N1a in Central European Neolithic skeletons at a high frequency enabled us to answer the question of whether the modern population is maternally descended from the early farmers instead of addressing the traditional question of the origin of early European farmers.

INTRODUCTORY WORD

2012

The aim of this book is to focus on the development of national awareness elaborated around a series of different case studies, in which the terms nation, homeland and people have been applied. This Romantic lexicon identifies similar but various conceptions of the national idea in some countries dominated by Italian, German and Slavic cultures, and in some groups or minorities such as the Jews and the Vlachs in Central and Mediterranean Europe. In order to clarify the cultural framework, the authors explore the construction of identity through folk tunes, poetry inspired by popular culture, and opera in which the national myths or heroes appear. In the self-making tradition, the national t…

Fango pannonico. Un paradigma populista per Miroslav Krleza

2019

As an obsessive keyword, the Pannonian mud appears in several writings of Miroslav Krleza. It represents the core of Croatian periphery, in particular the Podravina region, which was for long time untouched by modernity, and oppressed by feudal governments even after the fall of the Austrian Empire, from 1918 onwards. In this timeless place watered by the river Drava, the mud acquires a paradigmatic role like a phenomenon that causes historical conflicts. However, its ambiguous status of metahistorical symbol of a long lasting collapse is a contradictory factor, because of the consequences arising from it are unpredictable. As a contribute to this paradoxical attitude some images occur in K…
